Coastal Skipper Course

An SA Sailing ticket also entitles the holder to an ICC Certificate (International Certificate of Competence)

Introduction:
This course is designed to take the experienced Day Skipper or equivalent through the SAS Coastal syllabus and exam.

Requirements:

  • 15 days on board as skipper or watch captain
  • At least 8 full periods of 24 hours included in sea time
  • 48 hours night watch-keeping
  • 800 miles logged in tidal waters in the open sea
  • At least 3 passages of 70 miles or more

The Yacht :
Instruction is done on Alouette, a Holiday 34 fitted with the latest Raymarine equipment including an integrated chart plotter, Radar and AIS.

Course material:
You will get a very comprehensive course manual that covers all aspects of the SAS Coastal Syllabus. The manual has been updated regularly and covers every legitimate question that has been asked by an examiner during the end of course exams. It is the only manual of its kind in the country. You can collect your manual as soon as you have paid your deposit. We strongly recommend that you read your course manual thoroughly before coming on the course. You get much very more out of the course that way.

The course format :
The course itself comes in two formats:

  • The weekend (part time) course:
This is run over 6 weeks, with theory on Monday evenings and sailing on Saturdays. There will also be at least one night sail.
  • The weekday (full time) course:
This is run from Monday to Friday over two successive weeks. There will be at least one night sail. The practical exam is typically arranged for the Saturday immediately after the end of the course, but is of course weather dependant.

The practical component:
The course will cover all aspects of safety. It focuses on the things that can go wrong on a yacht, what you can do to prevent them from going wrong, and how you can manage the situation if they do go wrong. You will for example practice sailing the yacht back onto moorings simulating an engine failure. You will also practice all aspects of handling a yacht under power in a marina including mooring astern and turning a yacht around in a narrow channel. We will also cover Mediterranean mooring which is arguably the most challenging aspect of chartering a yacht in the Med.
A critical component of the SAS Coastal exam is always the Man Overboard exercise. At coastal level you are expected to be able to do this under sail, simulating an engine failure. Each student will do at least 20 MOB exercises during the course.

Course Convenor:
The course is run by Jannie Hofmeyr. Jannie was responsible for modernising the SAS Syllabus in 2008. He is chairman of the SAS Inland and Offshore Committee which is responsible for Certificates of Competence and Certificates of Fitness. Jannie is retired and teaches the SAS Coastal and Yachtmaster courses.
